Life saving kits
scientists at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology ( iicb ), Calcutta have developed kits that use radioactive tracer drugs to assess functioning of vital organs such as the heart, kidneys and liver. They include radioactive tracer drugs to measure kidney functioning and indicate the success of a kidney transplant operation, to assess liver function and even indicate instances of heart attacks. The success in developing radiotracer compounds for use in nuclear medicine to image human organs have buoyed India's hopes of tapping the highly lucrative market for these products. The demand for these drugs in India is estimated at $40 million at present, while it has already crossed the billion-dollar mark several years ago in the developed countries.
