Damage control
AFTER visiting the flood areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh, the prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, said India is going to take up the issue of floods with Nepal as most of the rivers which flood northern parts of India originate from there. He further informed that he had a word in this regard with the Nepalese prime minister at the recently concluded non-aligned summit at Durban. Floods in 55 districts of UP have claimed 1,280 lives and effected over four crore people.
The prime minister also stated that the Union government would send a study team to assess the damage caused by the floods in Uttar Pradesh. He further said that the Union government has given Rs 104 crore to the state from the calamity relief fund. Besides, the Union government will also provide assistance to repair damaged power transmission and distribution lines through the Power Finance Cooperation. HUDCO has already has already given Rs 35 crore under its scheme to the flood hit areas, Vajpayee said.
