Role of thermal power plants and coal mining in local area development and addressing regional imbalance: conditions and processes
Large number of thermal power plants are in pipeline in Vidarbha (Maharashtra). They are projected as local development using local resources, but local communities are protesting strongly as the benefits bypass them and they bear the adverse impacts. This submission by PEG to the Kelkar Committee, set up by Government of Maharashtra to study ‘Alternative Approaches to Balance Regional Development in Maharashtra State’ suggests that if thermal power plants are to be built, certain conditions and process, outlined in the note, should be followed to ensure minimisation of damage and optimal developmental impacts
