The prestigious Sasakawa-dha Disaster Prevention Award for 1997 by the United Nations has been awarded to Anand Swarup Arya, an internationally renowned earthquake expert.

The Centre has released Rs 24 crore during the current financial year for desert development in Rajasthan. The scheme is meant to stop the desert from spreading further in the state.

The Madhya Pradesh government has suspended 40 officers and other employees in connection with illegal felling of trees in the Bastar district, in accordance with a Supreme Court directive. Apart from this, criminal cases have been registered against 78 persons.

At least 5,000 children in the age group of one to six will be tested for lead toxicity. The projet has been launched by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in collaboration with the US-based George Foundation.
