IN MURKY WATERS

Irked by Britain's failure to enforce European Union (EU) standards on the quality of drinking water even after six years of efforts to reach an agreement, the European Commission (EC) has decided to take the issue to court. The EC's decision to take legal action differed sharply with a report of Britain's official drinking water inspectorate that said that 99.5 per cent of the water samples tested last year complied with national and EU standards on the quality of drinking water. But Ritt Bjerregaard, EU environment commissioner said that Britain still did not meet water standards on pesticide levels.
