Fear of a quake?

over 1,000 residents of Gondegaon village, about 55 kms from Nasik, are living in perennial fear of an imminent earthquake. The fear gripped the village after a stream of the Damanganaga river near the village "vanished', accompanied by a kilometre-long deep crack along the river course.

Besides, about 0.15 metre wide fissures in the one km stretch of land and cracks in the rocks and an old tree in the area were noticed, according to a geological expert, N M Avhad. According to Avhad, who visited the area, a noise akin to that of bursting of fire-crackers accompanied the development of these cracks and fissures. The water level of a well in the adjoining village had also reduced after the cracks were developed, said Avhad.

Nasik divisional commissioner R Ubale told newspersons that he has asked the district collector to visit Gondegaon immediately and undertake a survey.
