RESCUED FINALLY

The Supreme Court of India recently directed the Gujarat government to stop felling trees in the Narayan Sarovar Chin kara Sanctuary in Kutch to clear the ground for a mega cement factory. The ruling was given on an appeal filed by the Consumer Education Research Centre of Ahmedabad three years ago. The sanctuary contains limestone, lignite, bauxite and other valuable minerals. In 1993, the state government decided to reduce 765.79 sq km of the sanctuary established in 1981 to 94.87 sq km. Earlier, the Gujarat High Court had twice rejected the research centre's petition.
