BATTLING SMOG

Taking note of recent reports on health hazards posed by vehicular pollution in New Delhi, the Supreme Court of India recently gave directions to address the problem. On November 18, the court directed the secretary-cum-transport commissioner of the Delhi government to notify various unions of motor vehicles, including three-wheelers and taxis, to submit proposals by November 28, to check air pollution. Earlier, the court sug-gested various means like suspension of licences, scrapping licences of vehicles more than seven years old, no renewal of licences of three-wheelers and keeping one-third of the existing vehicles off the roads.
