Island at sea
ghoramara , an island on the Bay of Bengal is facing gradual extinction due to regular onslaught of tidal waves. During floods on August 22, tidal waves ravaged the island's eastern side. According to the flood report prepared by the sub-divisional officer of Kakwip, 13 sites on the island have been heavily damaged.
At five places, the breaches in the embankment are about 365.76 m wide. At another two places the breaches are about 426.72 m-wide while at some other spots those are about 975.36 m.
Of the 900 houses on the island, 400 collapsed on August 22 and another 250 have been severely damaged. The villagers find themselves caught between penury and the sea. They want to desert the island but cannot move out since they do not have any other source of livelihood. According to a senior official, the government has decided to evacuate the people from the island.
