No to reclamation

the Delhi Development Authority's ( dda ) plan for channelising the Yamuna and reclaiming the riverbed has run into trouble. The National Capital Region Planning Board ( ncrpb ) has raised serious objections to the scheme which is lying with the urban ministry.

The ncrpb has said that urbanisation of the reclaimed riverbed may have grave environmental and ecological implications for the capital.

The dda 's plan envisages reclamation of as much as 6,100 hectares (ha) of land out of the total 9,700 ha covered by Yamuna in the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

In the letter to the Union urban affairs minister, Ram Jethmalani, ncrpb member secretary Sarita J Das has pointed out that the floods in Delhi in 1978 and 1998 had covered the entire area which is now proposed to be reclaimed.
