Tobacco control

  • 14/06/2003

The World Heath Assembly adopted the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) at its 56th session in Geneva on May 21, 2003. The member countries affirmed that they would adopt and ratify the tobacco treaty at the earliest. FCTC can come into force only after 40 countries ratify it. Despite the fact that Germany and the US were opposed to the treaty, they did not impede the process.

The pact seeks to ensure that all countries follow similar regulations on tobacco. It aims to control advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products, label them with health warning as well as information about the constituents, restrict smoking in public places and keep tabs on prices.
