A LEASE OF LIFE
In a momentous judgement last month, the Supreme Court directed the Arunachal Pradesh government to ensure the safety of the Chakma and Hajong tribals in the state and to thwart any move to evict them forcibly from their homes and occupations. The court asked the state government to take the assistance of additional forces to stop forcible eviction of these tribals. The National Human Rights Commission had filed a petition on behalf of the tribals. The Chakma and Hajong tribals have sought refuge in the state after being forced out of Bangladesh.
