In short
on health grounds: The Karnataka government plans to use Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd's (KICL) pipeline from Kudremukh to Mangalore for supplying water to Dakshin Kannada and Udipi districts. The water will be used for drinking and industrial purposes. Environmentalists have raised concerns and say this will affect human health. KICL was using the pipeline to carry iron ore slurry to the pellet plant. But it stopped operations following the Supreme Court's directives on environmental grounds.
deadly weed: Parthenium, one of the world's deadliest weeds with its origins in Mexico, has been detected on the boundaries of the Kaziranga National Park in Assam. Experts say the weed destroys the food chain and thus poses a threat to the park. Humans suffer allergies (dermatitis, hay fever or asthma) after being exposed to the plant or its pollen. The weed is already a menace in the park's neighbouring districts.
