MEXICO
Ernesto Zedillo, the President of Mexico has thrown open the gates of the country's telecommunications industry, causing a veritable stampede. Giant inter- national carriers are rushing in to find places for themselves in the vast us $7 billion market; most of them are us players, like AT&r, MCI,GTE, Motorola and Teleglobe.
The European companies are keeping out of the race because 80 per cent of Mexico's international calls are made to the us. Satellite communications are also being opened to private investment and the carriers will be allowed to set their own tariffs.
