Union Carbide Corporation was under fire from 25 environment and human rights groups across the US, on the eleventh anniversary of Bhopal gas tragedy. They demanded that the company should face legal proceedings in India on the charge of culpable homicide, as the "perpetrator of the world's worst industrial disaster". On December 1, 1984, thousands of people were killed and maimed when a deadly gas leaked from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the Supreme Court on December 8 that they had gathered incriminating evidence to attribute "direct knowledge" to four top officials of the company.
