Tiger tales
the tigers of Uttar Pradesh (up) are having a bad time. According to the latest tiger census carried out in 1995, the tiger population of the state has declined to its lowest since 1984. Their number has fallen to 424 as against 465 in 1993. The 1993 figure itself had sent shock waves in the state forest department. Hence, the present figures are a cause for greater alarm.
There are two tiger reserves in up, the Corbett Tiger Reserve in Nainital and the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in the Terai belt. According to Iqbal Singh, conservator of forests (wildlife) in Dudhwa, an increase in livestock grazing and a sudden rise in poaching, has led to the decline in the number of tigers.
