An export opportunity
India is facing stiff competition from Pakistan, Thailand and even USA for the long-grain basmati-type rices but we may have monopoly in small and medium-grained scented rices like kalanamak. Since most of the high quality scented rices in international market are long grained, small grained high quality scented rice like kalanamak, which is superior in several other traits, may have its own attraction. In its native area of cultivation in eastern UP it is preferred much more than any basmati rice. It may have high domestic market demand.
