Guidelines for common bio-medical waste treatment facilities
A Common Bio-medical Waste Treatment Facility (CBWTF) is a set up where biomedical waste, generated from a number of healthcare units, is imparted necessary treatment to reduce adverse effects that this waste may pose. The treated waste may finally be sent for disposal in a landfill or for recycling purposes. Installation of individual treatment facilities by small healthcare units requires comparatively high capital investment. In addition, it requires separate manpower and infrastructure development for proper operation and maintenance of treatment systems. These guidelines are applicable to all the upcoming CBWTFs. In case of the existing CBWTFs, these guidelines shall be applicable as and when the existing CBWTFs desires to expand the treatment capacity of the existing CBWTF or desires to replace the existing treatment equipment with that of the new equipment or existing plant completed 12 years of life from the date of commissioning and requires installation of new treatment equipment.
