Indigenous artefacts unearthed in Australia
A large number of ancient indigenous artefacts were unearthed on May 17 in Australia. They were found at a construction site for the Australian defence headquarters at Bungendore in southern New South Wales. Around 20,000 tools of about 5,000 years old were recovered while the foundations of a hotel, which was built in the 19th century, were unearthed. According to archaeologists there is a wealth of heritage material in the area. "This is fairly characteristic of these sorts of landscapes in the area,' said Doug Williams told media.
The defence department said the ancient artefacts would be preserved. According to Peter Hicks, the chief executive of the construction company, the construction plans and road routes were changed in to preserve the ancient tools. A selection of the artefacts will be displayed at the defence headquarters in June 2008.
