The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has planned to launch 49 projects to phase out 5,000 metric tonne of ozone depleting substances (ODS) in 27 developing countries, including India.
The Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund for Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MP) has approved an amount of US $20.9 million for the new projects. The projects will aim at eliminating the production and the consumption of ODS.
They would focus on the refrigeration sector, the polyurethane foams sector, the aerosols sector, the cleaning solvents sector, and the methyl bromide sector. UNIDO will take full responsibility of the entire project cycle which will include project identification, preparation, implementation, evaluation and follow up consultation.
Morocco has launched a project to develop renewable energy supplies and promote substitutes for fossil and wood fuels that pollute the air. This step is a part of the country's commitments made at the 1992 Earth Summit. The project focuses on rural areas and the urban centre of Essaouria. It includes actions to promote sustainable agricultural development, educate people about environmental protection, build partnerships with community organisations and boost the availability of environmentally sound energy.
