Ghana

A British zoologist has been banned from Ghana's Bui National Park, which will soon be flooded as a result of the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Black Volta river. "I was not allowed to enter the park because I could have challenged the results of a recently-commissioned environmental impact assessment of the Bui dam project,' alleges Daniel Bennett, a zoologist at the Scotland-based University of Aberdeen. The park is home to two of the largest groups of hippos left in Ghana. Bennett claims the dam will not only destroy all the feeding grounds of the hippos, but also the area's rich fauna and flora that is yet to be documented. The villagers who will be affected by the dam have requested Bennett to maintain his interest in the park.
