Gross violation
Despite the Supreme Court (SC) guidelines that ban intensive and semi-intensive aquaculture in the coastal regulation zone (CRZ), shrimp farms are thriving in Goa. These unauthorised farms are operating under the very nose of the district-level aquaculture authority.
The SC, which initially ordered the destruction of shrimp farms in the CRZ in 1996, revised the ruling in 2000 to allow traditional improved farming. It was also stipulated that the farms should get an environmental impact assessment done. They would need to maintain a low stocking rate, too, and ensure that sediment and effluent are treated.
