A five year old`s problem

He's of a rare blood group: the Bombay group

The Bombay Blood Group was first described by Y M Bhede and his team in a 1951 article in the medical journal, The Lancet. Prashant Choudhary of Kolkata who has been researching on this blood group for some years now says that the first case of this blood group came into limelight in Bombay in 1950. "I have a list of only 53 people in the country, who have been marked as people with the 'Bombay blood group',' he says. In five-year old Arvind's case, it was believed that hundreds of units of "Bombay blood group' would be available in Chhattisgarh. But all hopes were belied soon. The child's father whose monthly earnings come to a measly Rs 3,000 had arranged for the operation after the state government helped with Rs 1.5 lakhs. But when Arvind's blood group was tested, it was found that he had the rare "Bombay Blood Group'. Doctors were concerned, but they were hopeful of arranging five units of "Bombay Blood group'. They hadn't reckoned the gravity of the problem.Innocent Arvind is unaware of the problem and asks innocently, "Will I be healthy?', playing a game of snakes and ladders on his bed. No one can answer this question right now.
