Tackling oil spills
the International Maritime Organisation (imo), a un agency, has recently approved a convention that sets up rules and regulations about liability and compensation in cases of oil spills by ships. Until now imo rules covered spills from tankers carrying oil as cargo. The convention covers pollution damage in the territories, territorial seas and exclusive economic zones of member countries of the imo. Countries like Germany, the us and India are members of the imo . The convention also comprises resolutions promoting legal protection for ship crew members who take up measures to prevent or minimise the effects of pollution incidents. Ships' fuel spills are more damaging than the ones caused by tankers.
