Online Green notes
http://www.greenfacts.org
This site under review is run by an eponymous Belgian non-profit organisation, created in December 2001 by individuals from a variety of backgrounds. It brings complex scientific reports on health and the environment to non-specialists.
As a contribution to the International Day for Biological Diversity, green facts has also launched an online summary of the second edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook. The report communicates the latest scientific consensus findings on the environment both on land and in water.
Biodiversity Outlook 2 takes stock of the Earth's biodiversity, analyses the factors leading to biodiversity loss, and advocates key interventions that would reduce pressure on the environment.
The site has now distilled the content of Global Biodiversity Outlook 2 in three levels of detail ranging from a dozen key questions and short answers on the main issues, through more elaborate explanations of relevant sections of the original document.
The site highlights that while protected areas are an essential agency for conservation, they are by no means sufficient to stem the loss of biodiversity and must be complemented by economic incentives to conserve biodiversity. There is also stress on use of ecosystem services in a sustainable manner. Moreover, biodiversity must be integrated into the agriculture, fishery and forestry sectors.
