More liberal
India's broad strategy for negotiations on liberalisation of trade in services was approved by the Cabinet Committee on World Trade Organization matters at a meeting in New Delhi on June 5. The committee is headed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The plan would involve opening up service sectors, including professional (lawyers, doctors, etc), health, financial, computer-related, architecture, tourism and book-keeping. Curbs will stay on activities such as distribution (retail and wholesale trade), legal, postal and courier, and audio-visual services.
