Troubling thaw
After a heat wave scorched Europe this summer, it is the largest ice shelf in the Arctic region that seems to have fallen prey to global warming. At least 3,000 years old, the Ward Hunt ice shelf on the north coast of Ellesmere Island in Canada's Nunavutterritory has broken into two. Consequently, it has drained fresh waterfrom the northernhemisphere's largest epishelf lake trapped behind the ice shelf. Scientists see in the event evidence of accelerated climate change in the North Pole
