Blights Mumbai too

Recent news reports from Mumbai also suggest the existence of a huge medical waste-recycling racket in the city. Private companies have been hired to collect hospital wastes in the city and transport them safely to disposal sites. But they have been found selling these colour-coded bags to recyclers. On May 27, the vigilance cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (bmc) conducted a raid and caught people selling such wastes. However, no action has been taken yet. "In our recent visit to a slum area in Wadala, we found bags full of hospital wastes lying in the open, with the bmc seal on them. Children had been hired to segregate the syringes. We have informed bmc about it,' says Indu M G of non-governmental organisation Toxics Link.
