Rail-based: At least 114 km of railways are in operation in Beijing municipality. By 2008 there will be 188 km. Current capacity is 2.4 million passengers per day but it carries 1.7 million. By 2008, capacity will rise to 3.9 million

Bus rapid transit system: Line 1 is 16 km long with 17 stops, running from Qianmen in the city centre to Demaozhuang in the south. Features environment-friendly engines, longer carriages and runs in a fenced-in lane. These buses run faster than conventional counterparts thanks to signal priority, an electronic information system and automatic fare collection and operating systems

Regular buses: In March 2007, number of buses rose to 18,000, including 3,759 CNG buses and 642 dual-powered trolley buses. About 7,000 old buses were replaced or retrofitted by 2006. By 2008, Euro IV emissions standards will be introduced. Dedicated supply of 50 ppm sulphur diesel for buses has begun. Three fuelcell buses will operate during the games

Taxis: All taxis will be upgraded or scrapped. Of the operating fleet of 60,000, more than 47,000 old taxis were scrapped and replaced with Euro III-compliant vehicles
