Net to capture trafficers
The world's largest wildlife law enforcement network has been launched by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (asean), on November 01, 2005. Known as asean Wildlife Enforcement Network (asean- wen), it would help track the regions multi-billion illegal wildlife trade.
The asean-wen would strengthen cross-border cooperation, information exchanges, cooperation between national environmental and law enforcement officials and training for wildlife trafficking agencies.
An estimated us $7 billion to us $10 billion a year is made by criminal gangs around the world in trading animals. China and the us have a major market for illicit wildlife thus their participation is considered crucial for the network's success. "The network's success is critical for the future of the region's biological diversity,' said Petipong Pungbun Na Ayudhya, permanent secretary, ministry of natural resources and environment, Thailand.
