Thinking beyond sectors for sustainable development
The book provides a concise introduction to the debates in a number of vital development sectors in view of the move from the era of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reviews progress made in each sector, and considers how looking beyond sectors might open new opportunities for inclusive, sustainable development. This book was produced as part of a University College London-London International Development Centre research collaboration entitled, 'Thinking Beyond Sectors for Sustainable Development'. Each chapter in this book was produced collaboratively by academics from a wide number of disciplines, covering topics such as biodiversity and ecosystems, climate and climate change, human health, food security and agriculture, information management, governance, etc. One of the key messages from the book is that governance of development goals is important to the design and future implementation of the SDGs. It also shows the 17 SDGs represented in three concentric layers, reflecting their main intended outcomes. This framework reveals potential conflicts and synergies between goals, and how their interactions might be governed.
