Release of water from Maharashtra's reservoirs following heavy rain flooded Karnataka, especially Bijapur, Raichur, Gulbarga and Belgaum districts. Seven other districts were also affected. The death toll touched 111 on August 6, 2005. Villages along the Krishna, Bhima and Ghataprabha rivers were the worst hit. Crops worth Rs 160 crore were lost.

Rumours of cracks in Maharashtra's Koyna dam created panic. Gates of Almatti and Narayanapur dams were opened. "They [Maharashtra] have verbally admitted that the structure is unsafe,' said S Shriram, advisor, Karnataka Irrigation Department. "The damage is Rs 800 crore, and it is going up,' added Ramesh Zalki, secretary, Revenue Department.
