Commercial transport in urban areas

The presence of commercial transport in our cities has steadily grown over recent years. Commercial transport seems today indispensable, especially in downtown areas, as it ensures that goods and services reach the local population, organizes public services such as waste removal and thus contributes to economic life. Thereby commercial transport is affected by the evolution of our societies: digitalization, acceleration, any-time delivery standards offer new opportunities but also put increasing pressure on the commercial transport sector. At the same time, backed by legislation European cities have set ambitious targets to reduce air pollution, noise and CO2 emissions. The recent German Climate Protection Plan 2050 for instance contains a specific target for CO2 reduction for the transport sector which can only be achieved if commercial transport is part of the sector efforts. It is thus essential to find better solutions for the planning and management of commercial transport and urban goods movements. The study "Commercial Transport in Urban Areas" discusses these issues and provides interesting insights into selected approaches in Germany.
