Question raised in Lok Sabha on Violation of Pollution Laws, 21/03/2017. The Ministry has notified industry specific effluent and emission norms under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution), Act, 1974, the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 are enforced by the concerned State Pollution Control Boards/ Pollution Control Committees in the industries. As reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), all the major polluting industries have provided pollution control measures to control air, water and treatment and disposal of hazardous waste. CPCB undertakes random surprise inspection under its Environmental Surveillance Programme and takes action against industries found non-compliant with the norms. Directions have been issued to 546 industries for seeking compliance of CPCB recommendations, while 113 industries have been issued directions for closure during 2010-2015 by CPCB.
