An overview of nuclear power in the context of additional capacity to Kaiga NPP
The decision by the govt. of India in May 2017 to commission ten nuclear reactors of the type PHWR of 700 MW capacity each, and the other proposal to add four more reactors of the type VVER of 1,000 MW capacity each at Kudankulam NPP, has given rise to serious concerns to the communities around these projects, and to the concerned civil society groups in the country. In this background it is in the overall interest of our communities to diligently review the true relevance of nuclear power to India in the context of fast changing scenario, not only within the country but globally too. In this background the scenario around Kaiga NPP in Karnataka is considered for the related discussions in the overall context of India.
