Compared to the size of the us economy, the figures I have at hand may not be stunning (and as yet I have no way of knowing, because I do not have comparative data from other countries); compared to the size of North-South aid flows, they indeed are. During the last few years, all North-South aid flows, including World Bank loans, have totalled about US $55-60 billion each year. But a recent report in the us News and World Report says that in 1994 alone, us citizens, foundations and corporations donated a staggering sum of us $129.9 billion (approximately Rs 4,30,000 crore) to American NGOs.
