Judgement of the Supreme Court of India regarding de-commissioning of Mullaperiyar Dam, 11/01/2018
Judgement of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of Russel Joy Vs Union of India & Others dated 11/01/2018 regarding de-commissioning of Mullaperiyar Dam. The petition has stated that the Chief Engineer of the dam project, Mr. John Pennycuick envisaged the lifetime of the dam for a period of 50 years. As 121 years have expired from the date of the construction of the dam, the decommissioning of the said dam has become essential and there is need for assessment of the lifespan of the dam regard being had to the safety of the citizens especially the persons residing downstream of the river.
Apex Court directs the Central Government to constitute a Sub-Committee to exclusively monitor the measures for ensuring a high level of preparedness to face any disaster, which is unpredictable in relation to Mullaperiyar Dam. The State of Kerala and Tamil Nadu shall also constitute seprate Sub-Commitees for the same purpose.
