Order of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of Research Foundation for Science Vs Union of India & Others dated 18/04/2018 regarding provision of clean drinking water to residents living around Union Carbide plant, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. In the response filed on behalf of the State of Madhya Pradesh, so far as the status of provision for drinking water is concerned, it has been stated that in the additional 20 localities water is being regularly supplied to a total of 3313 households which have been provided with water tap connections. It is also stated that against the requirement of 150 ltrs. of water per day per person, nearly 244 ltrs. of water per day per person is being provided which is well within the criteria laid down by the Central Public Health Engineering and Environment Organization (CPHEEO) Manual. Insofar as the spread of toxic waste in the water is concerned, from the response of the State of Madhya Pradesh it appears that the quality of water supply is claimed to be good notwithstanding which fact sample(s) of water has been taken by the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR), Lucknow and the report of analysis is still awaited.
Supreme Court directs the Monitoring Committee to make a field inspection on the status of drinking water and the quantum thereof per day per person and submits its findings to the Court. The report of the IITR, Lucknow may also be expedited and be placed before the Court.
