Toughness that appeals
Wood can now be produced from waste. The UK's Save Wood Products Limited has come up with a product called durawood that combines the properties of wood and plastic. Derived from recycled polystyrene packaging waste, the product bears the aesthetic and physical properties of wood and the durability of plastic. Durawood is claimed to have the ability to keep in good shape for several years, with no protective treatment.
The technique to produce durawood involves the collection of waste, compacting it to 1/50th of its original volume, granulating and mixing it with non-toxic additives. The end-result of these processes forms the feedstock for the product. Being a substitute for natural wood, durawood helps avoid the cutting of trees.
