Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding solid waste management in Tripura, 07/05/2019
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Compliance of Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 (State of Tripura) dated 07/05/2019 regarding status of compliance of orders of this Tribunal on the subject of solid waste management and allied issues.
A status report has been filed on behalf of State of Tripura which indicates the steps taken for solid, plastic and bio-medical waste management. Some of the steps mentioned are:
i. Solid Waste Management Policy prepared by the Urban Development Department
ii. Allocation of Rs. 3.50 crores for door-to-door solid waste collection and source segregation
iii. Process to set up Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at 12 Public Health Facilities for pre-treatment of bio-medical waste.
The NGT after discussions with the Chief Secretary, issued directions which include:
1. Apart from Agartala, which has been declared as Model city, atleast three villages in every District may be notified on the website within two weeks from today as model cities/towns/villages which will be made fully compliant within the next six months. Remaining cities, towns and villages of the State may be made fully compliant in respect of environmental norms within one year.
ii. A quarterly report be furnished by the Chief Secretary, every three months.
iii. Estimate of value of environmental degradation and cost of restoration be prepared and compensation be planned and recovered from polluters for environmental restoration and restitution on that basis.
