Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding waste discharge into kunds in village Arita, Mathura District, Uttar Pradesh, 11/10/2019
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Sushil Raghav Vs Union of India & Others dated 11/10/2019 regarding discharge of sewage and domestic waste into the Radha Kund and Shyam Kund in Village Arita in Mathura District, Uttar Pradesh.
A joint inspection and action taken report was submitted by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and the District Magistrate, Mathura and Mathura Vrindavan Nagar Nigam on the matter, which confirmed that the water in the two kunds was found to be unfit for consumption on account of contamination due to discharge of sewage and domestic waste. Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority (MVDA) has to clean the said kunds and prevent discharge.
The Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority has been directed to furnish an action taken report by November 11, 2019 and the UPPCB has to ensure control of water pollution in exercise of its authority under the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 by taking action which may include recovery of compensation on ‘Polluter Pays’ principle. Till the situation improves, a message should be displayed with warning that water was unfit for human consumption.
