Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding dumping of waste under Pallavaram bridge, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, 03/02/2020
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Tribunal on its own motion SUO MOTU Based on the News Item in Dinamalar Tamil Newspaper dated 27.01.2020, “A Bridge has become a source of spreading Contamination and Communicable Diseases” Vs The Government of Tamil Nadu, Represented by its Chief Secretary and Others dated 03/02/2020 regarding dumping of solid waste and animal waste from the meat shops beneath the Pallavaram Round over bridge. Further, it has become a place where sewage water is also stagnated due to non maintenance of the sewage system in that area.
The NGT directed the appointment of a Joint Committee comprising of District Collector, Chengalpattu, State Pollution Control Board and Commissioner, Pallavaram Municipality to look into the allegations and submit factual and action taken report. The tribunal ordered for appropriate action to taken against persons responsible for causing environmental pollution and imposing environmental compensation. The committee has been directed to ascertain the number of meat shops in that area and whether they are having the necessary licences or other consents and whether the waste management is proper and in accordance with the provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, and if there is any violation to take appropriate action against them and incorporate the same in the report.
