Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Shankarlal Prajapat Vs State of Madhya Pradesh dated 07/04/2021 regarding pollution caused by M/s Grasim Chemical Division Limited, Birlagram, Nagada, district Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, causing contamination of water and damage to the environment and public health.

The matter was last considered on October 12, 2020 in the light of the report of the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board  acknowledging discharge of polluted effluents by the industries in question in Chambal river through a drain which was required to be remedied.

Grasim Chemical Division has been directed to deposit the compensation assessed by the authorities as there was non compliance of environmental norms. The District Magistrate, Ujjain should monitor execution of action plan for ensuring compliance with the environmental norms by the industries as well as local bodies in the matter of discharge of effluents/sewage, supply of drinking water, health checkups and utilization of STP treated water. This is also necessary for rejuvenation of river Chambal which is a polluted river stretch.

The District Magistrate, Ujjain has to send a report to the Secretary, Environment Department, Madhya Pradesh on quarterly basis to facilitate remediation of polluted river stretch in Chambal river, the NGT order said.
