Report on behalf of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Haldia refinery regarding flash fire (December 23, 2021) at IOC's Haldia refinery leaving 3 dead and 44 injured.
There was no impact on the environment due to the fire incident - there was no impact on air quality due to the fire incident and no significant variation was observed in the ambient air quality of Haldia region with respect to the major parameters (SO2, NOx, PM10, PM2.5, CO, NH3 and Benzene). The levels of PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels were slightly higher. However, the same was not on account of the fire incident. PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels are usually high in the Haldia region during winter.
There was no impact on effluent treatment plant discharge quality due to the fire incident, December 12, 2021. Also, no solid waste (oily sludge or any hazardous waste) was generated during the incident. The report said that the water used to control the fire incident was discharged into ETP through open channels, which was then treated along with effluent generated from the refinery. The treated water was then resent to the fire water network.
