Affidavit filed by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding compensation to be paid by the Damodar Valley Corporation, district Purulia, West Bengal for violating environmental norms by the discharge of wastewater from the industry resulting in damages to agricultural land.

The West Bengal Pollution Control Board directed the industry to pay a compensation of twenty lakh. The Damodar Valley Corporation submitted the bank guarantee amounting to twenty lakh and assured the state PCB that the industry would comply with the environmental norms.

The NGT, November 12, 2021 directed the officials of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) along with the district magistrate and collector, Purulia; senior environmental engineer, West Bengal Pollution Control Board and superintending engineer, Irrigation and Waterways Directorate to inspect the site.

The committee inspected the site, December 14, 2021 and collected the water samples and as per the guidelines of the CPCB for assessing environmental compensation for an industry - have assessed environmental compensation of Rs. 50,68,125.

The committee has assessed the environmental compensation on the basis of the CPCB guidelines and has calculated the number of non-compliance days from the date of news published in the newspaper (July 9, 2021) regarding environmental pollution by Raghunathpur thermal power station and the date of inspection of the committee, December 14, 2021 and has arrived at 159 days of non-compliance.
