Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding mining on the river bed of Damodar, mouza Gopalpur, district Bankura, West Bengal, 17/08/2022
The allegation in the Original Application is that Marco Franesco Shoes Pvt. Ltd. was awarded a contract for sand mining in mouza Gopalpur, district Bankura covering an area of about 12.10 acres on the river bed of Damodar. It was stated in the application that Marco Franesco Shoes was carrying on the mining operations without having a valid environmental clearance or even without a consent to operate.
The NGT, April 25, 2022 had directed the District Magistrate, Bankura district to take immediate restraint action against the operations of the miner - if illegal mining was found. However, no affidavit of compliance has been filed by the District Magistrate. The tribunal, August 17, 2022 directed the District Magistrate, Bankura to file a personal affidavit within one week and listed the matter for August 29, 2022.
