What is the right to a healthy environment?

The triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity and nature loss, and pollution is increasingly affecting the human rights of people across the globe. This Information Note has been jointly prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It aims to improve understanding of the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment and why it matters. The note traces the origins of this right, describes its key elements and highlights the expected benefits of its recognition by the United Nations General Assembly. Importantly, the note outlines the roles of different stakeholders in advancing realization of the right.
