Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding pollution by dyeing units and disposal of their waste into river Thirumanimutharu, Salem district, Tamil Nadu, May 25, 2023
Acting on a complaint that dyeing units are discharging waste water without any treatment into Thirumanimutharu river, Salem district, Tamil Nadu, the NGT directed submission of a factural report from the authorities. The court ordered constitution of a joint committee comprising Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, the Central Pollution Control Board, regional office Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Chennai and the District Magistrate Salem.
The SPCB would be nodal agency for coordination and compliance of the court order. The committee would visit the site, collect all relevant informations and submit a factual report within two months.
The report besides providing factual status on consent compliance of the industries in question, must also provide number of such industries and final mode of disposal of effluents. The committee should also take into account River Action Plan prepared for Thirumanimutharu which is one of the polluted river stretch in Tamil Nadu, falling in Priority I, the NGT order, May 25, 2023 said.
