Report by Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee in Original Application No 593 of 2017 (Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti Vs Union of India) dated 23/10/2023.
The report said that Chandigarh is generating around 220 MLD sewage water and having the treatment capacity of 250.7 MLD - Chandigarh has more than 100 per cent treatment capacity. At present 8 sewage treatment plants (STPs) are operational. Out of these 8 STPs, 5 STPs are meeting the latest norms. Rest 3 STPs have been upgraded and out of these 2 STPs are already in trial/ stabilization mode and the remaining 1 STP will also start trial/ stabilization phase very soon and after stabilization/ trial run, these 3 STPs will also meet with the latest norms.
Pipelines are being laid for the distribution of tertiary treated water and after laying down of pipeline and completion of trial run of 3 STPs more water (tertiary treated) will be available and will be supplied to all possible places which will reduce the fresh water consumption. No industrial unit is allowed to operate without having a proper Effluent Treatment Plant.
With respect to installation of Online Real Time Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS), the report said that Chandigarh does not have any 17 category industries and grossly polluting industries.
The NGT, August 17, 2023 directed notice to be issued to all the state PCB's/PCCs to submit the compliance report regarding the functioning of ETPs/CETPs/STPs.
