Improvement in water quality of river Yamuna in 2023 in comparison to 2022: GNCTD

  • 20/12/2023

Due to coordinated action taken by the various concerned departments, water quality of river Yamuna has improved in the period of January 2023 to December 2023 in comparison to the corresponding months in the period of January 2022 to December 2022.

It has been observed that the water quality of river Yamuna in respect of BOD, COD and faecal coliform at ISBT (after meeting Najafgarh drain) and Asgarpur (Okhla barrage after confluence of Shahdara and Tughlakabad drains) and water quality of Najafgarh drain in respect of BOD and COD have improved significantly in the months of January 2023 to December 2023 in comparison to corresponding months of January 2022 to December 2022.

Water quality status of river Yamuna at 8 locations is being monitored by DPCC laboratory on a monthly basis.

There is an increase in treatment capacity by 35 MGD and a new 124 MGD sewage treatment plant (STP) has been constructed in Okhla. Sewerage network in 283 unauthorized colonies has been laid and 21 JJ clusters have been connected with the sewerage networks/DSTPs (decentralised sewage treatment plants).

There are 22 drains which are falling into river Yamuna, out of which 9 drains have been tapped and 2 drains are partially tapped. While 2 drains (Najafgarh and Shahdara) are large drains and technically not feasible to tap whole drains. Both the drains are included in the Interceptor Sewer Project of DJB where substantial flow of sub-drains has been/will be tapped. 9 drains are yet to be tapped.

The above points were mentioned in the report by the Department of Environment, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, December 20, 2023 (GNCTD) in OA No. 06 of 2012 (Nizamuddin West Association Versus UOI & Ors.)
